A compact venue telling a massive story. The D-Day Museum recently had a massive refit and emerged as The D-Day Story. Thankfully, local disabled people/groups were asked for their views and advice in the design stage. The result is a well laid out space and multi-sensory exhibits. It has…
* Website info for disabled visitors
* Good signposting
* Free admission for your PA, friend or carer
* A clearly written guidebook to purchase
* A ‘Quick and Easy’ guide to the museum
* An audio guide of the Overlord Embroidery gallery
* Step-free access and space for wheelchairs to turn and to get close to the exhibits and displays
* Displays designed to be viewed from a wheelchair
* A stimulating range of audio visual and activity displays
* Easy to handle models of some of the very large exhibits
* Maps that have descriptions written in Braille
* Information panels with good font size and colour contrast
* An induction loop in Reception and throughout display areas
* Appropriate lighting throughout
* Seating areas within the display areas
* Helpful staff with disability awareness training
* A Cafe area and Gift area
They also run events such as…
* Autism friendly hours
* Touch tours suitable for blind and partially sighted visitors
* British Sign Language tours for deaf visitors
* Family friendly days
…and more in the planning!

75 years on from D-Day the number of surviving Veterans is fast dwindling but some of the ‘old boys’ who left this local shoreline for Normandy on 6th June 1944 do make appearances at the museum to interact with visitors. That is very special.

So, do visit if you are in the area. Check their website for full venue details and events. And afterwards, whether you think it is brilliant or not so brilliant, they are very keen to hear visitors feedback and ideas.
