This is a Tudor house and museum with a garden set in the Old Town of Southampton, there is no disabled parking on site but blue badge holders can park for free all day in The Quays car park so this makes an ideal base for exploring the Old Town. The main entrance is wide, level and the door is left open so is easy for the disabled to get in. The reception area and shop is large and has a low counter area. I asked how much was accessible and was surprised to hear they have a lift to the first floor, I was expecting to only be able to do the downstairs due to the age of the building. They didn’t know if my chair would fit as it’s a small lift and awkward to get in so someone very kindly took me to the lift to check it out before I paid, my chair is pretty large but it was fine so they took me back to pay. The whole of the downstairs was accessible including the garden and the cafe, some of the door ways are a little tight so need to take care in places. The disabled toilet was on the ground floor, it wasn’t radar key operated due to it incorporating the baby change. All the doors were left open but I did notice a few had automatic opening buttons on the wall next to them. The air raid shelter, the cellars/basement and King Johns chapel aren’t accessible to chair users due to stairs. When we had done the ground floor I had to send my P.A to find a staff member to come and operate the lift, you can’t operate it yourself due to the complexities of it. A bell next to the lift to ask for assistance would be beneficial here. Once up to the first floor you come out into a large room, you then go up a ramp towards the rest of the rooms on this level. A platform lift takes you up a small flight of stairs to these rooms but unfortunately the day I visited it was out of order so missed out on three rooms. You can also take the lift up a further level to an extra room but I didn’t do this. We then found the staff member again who kindly took me back down in the lift to exit. You can view the basement and air raid shelter in the travellers room on an interactive video. I think the accessibility was superb for the age of the building but it wasn’t perfect hence the four star rating. If you enjoy history it’s worth a visit.
