I am going to be reviewing the Kumarakom Lake Resort, a resort within which meandering man made lakes flow, nestling on the banks of the Vembanad river backwater! The heritage structures have not been touched from the exterior, the interiors are plush, luxorious and fit for royalty – in fact Prince Charles loved his stay there! There are wooden bridges which work as ramps, connecting every part of this sprawling resort. The accessible en suite room is kitted with a low basin, drop down bars etc. and the roofless roll in shower area is open to nature, an amazing experience to bathe under the stars! The rooms are huge, the beds a bit higher than usual, super luxurious, with stunning views of the backwater, lakes, bridges and other thatched bungalows. Being a heritage status property, there are some places which cannot be ramped like the Ayurvedic therapies centre, but if you’re happy to be lifted up the steps, the staff will happily comply.

The highlight of my stay in Kumarakom Lake Resort was taking a backwater ride on their gorgeous houseboat, a bucket list dream come true! The food was mouth wateringly delicious the menu was both a la Carter and buffet, with a variety of cuisine to suit every pallet. The Chettinad prawn curry I ordered on the first day had the largest most freshest prawns I have ever eaten! The staff are extremely helpful, ever smiling, eager to help and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The daily ‘deepam'(a large iron stand with 150 oils lamps) lighting ritual is truly in keeping with the ethereal nature of the place, and was one of my favourite parts of the day.
