This is the house where the famous poet Thomas Hardy was born. The main car park is about 150 meters from the visitors centre and cafĂ©, there are two disabled spaces outside on the road but these were taken when we arrived. The car park was rough in places and you had to go up a short steep slope to get out onto the road back to the visitor centre. The entrance was up a slope and had a button on the wall to allow automatic door opening, the disabled toilet is found here and was of a reasonable size. When we arrived we wanted to get some lunch but all the tables were taken, a staff member kindly put up a plastic foldable table for us. They were all kind and helpful. The house itself is probably about 600 yards up an unmade dirt/gravel road which was muddy and uneven in places, if booked in advance you can park behind the house which is 30 yards from the entrance. Most of the gardens were accessible to wheelchairs and so was the ground floor of the house though a level front door. There isn’t much space inside the property so I suspect they only allow one chair inside at a time but its large enough to turn around in each room, the upstairs isn’t accessible unless you can climb the steep, narrow stairs.
