Sarah

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Sarah and I live in Derby in the East Midlands. I use a powered wheelchair.

I currently have 5 budgies, gerbil, hamster & a cat. My hobbies include going on day trips and going to restaurants.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF LIFE AS A DISABLED PERSON

I ended up sick with M.E at the age of 21 (2010) and became a wheelchair user in 2013. I also have carers.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DISABILITY?

I would describe my disability as a bit rubbish. It is very difficult having so much motivation to do stuff whilst also being too sick to do it.

WHAT IS ACCESSIBILITY LIKE WHERE YOU LIVE?

Accessibility is reasonably good in Derby. Like any area there are places with stairs though.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE FOR ACCESSIBILITY AND WHY?

Harry Potter Studio Tour and Elvaston Castle. Both these places have large accessible changing place facilties and are very accessible in a wheelchair. Elvaston Castle also has  trampers available so you can access nature.

Q. WHAT IS ONE ACCESSIBILITY IMPROVEMENT THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE?

I would like to see more businesses have a ramp at the entrance.

I would also like to see more listed buildings be accessible, I miss going to National Trust properties for example.

I also want to see all areas of the countryside have all terrain wheelchairs/scooters available so more people can access nature.

As well as this I want buses to have more space available and for all coaches, taxis & planes to be accessible for all sizes of wheelchair
