Montacute House is one of the best preserved Elizabethan mansions, as you can imagine it isn’t the most accessible for the disabled especially wheelchair users. There are five disabled spaces around 25 – 30 metres from the main reception, if these are all full you can be dropped off. The gardens have good accessibility and are mostly on the flat, there’s ramp access to areas where there are steps. The orangery, cafe and shop are all accessible. The house its self is accessed by wheelchair users via a separate entrance on the opposite side of the house to the main entrance door. There is a steepish ramp to take you up the steps to the door, you then have to use the call button on the wall to summon help to let you in. Once inside only the ground floor is accessible to someone who uses a wheelchair, hence only receiving a 3 star rating for accessibility. The only disabled toilet is by the entrance, its not large but allows a right side transfer onto the loo. When we were there the female toilet was out of action so there was a porta loo. Most decided to use the disabled instead which I thought was acceptable, when are National Trust going to install radar locks on their disabled toilets?
