We chose the Brandling Arms for a bite to eat after shopping on the High Street. As it was sunny we decided to sit outside, inside is fully stepfree as we’ve eaten there before. There are two large decked areas with seating and parasol. Unfortunately, not wheelchair accessible but to the side there is a table with plenty of space to manoeuvre your wheelchair. As with most places, table is too low for powerchair users and J had to crouch over to get his meal. Food was great and seems to be quite consistently so. They have a great selection of beers and ciders, staff very knowledgeable and I tried Orchard Pig which was sweet but not cloyingly so. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any straws when we visited. Management says they normally have paper straws for their customers that require them and are looking into the matter.
Normally, I act as waitress getting drinks etc from the bar but this time J went in by himself. The bar is of standard height so exchange of money is a bit of a stretch. Staff offered to bring drinks to the table without being asked and did so with a smile ( all staff were relaxed, smiley and comfortable talking to J, whose speech can be a bit indistinct)
Entrance to the pub itself is via 2 sets of double doors which were open as it was warm. Lone wheelchair users may struggle to get through the doors when they are closed. Didn’t see a bell for assistance which would be useful. Inside the chairs and tables are a metre is so apart so moving to the toilets was ok. Be aware there are some small slopes inside and it is quite dark inside.
Disabled use toilet is big enough to turn a powerchair around, well lit, and clean and tidy. Transfer from left to right only. Cardinal sin here , common, with a lot of toilets , was the alarm cord was wrapped around the arm of the toilet and didn’t reach the floor. Need to get that sorted guys.
A few changes and it would be a great 5* pub
