I visited this venue to see a Michael Bublé concert and was very impressed with the accessibility. First of all getting tickets was an easy process, you have to apply for an access card which links your requirements to your ticketing account. This means you can purchase accessibility tickets online if you want to. However they do recommend you phone their free phone accessibility ticket line to discuss your requirements.

The disabled parking is signposted as you drive into the N.E.C site and is available on a first come first served basis, is close to the arena and is manned. I stayed at the Premier Inn on site so didn’t use the car park, I traveled by taxi and I was dropped off just outside the entrance.

There’s a separate accessible entrance for disabled visitors to the left of the main entrance, this was easily seen with large signage above. This entrance is on the level and the door is left open so it’s easy to get inside. Once inside you are greeted by security who will check your bags, they seemed like a decent and respectful bunch throughout the search. The foyer is massive and was easy to get around despite the vast amount of people there. To get to the arena bowl you travel down a wide corridor with a long, shallow slope from the foyer.

The accessible seating area is up a long, shallow ramp and runs all the way along the sides of the arena. It’s at the front of the stand but is raised up above floor level so even when people are standing on the floor area in front, you can still see the stage/performers. There’s disabled toilets in The Forum and behind blocks 1,7,11 and 15 which are all Radar key operated, however I saw in a 5 minute period three women jump out of the queue for the ladies and abuse the disabled toilet because someone had left it open. There’s also larger ambulant cubicles inside the single sex toilets for those who need the extra space but not the facilities which I like the idea of. I was also delighted to see a changing places toilet behind block 12.

After a fantastic performance from Mr Bublé it was an easy exit from the venue via the same method as getting in. We had to go to the taxi rank to pick up a taxi back to our hotel, this was about 150-200 meters away, was a flat journey and serviced with dropped kerbs. All the taxis waiting would have taken a wheelchair, they were either black cabs or euro taxis.
