Last weekend, we visited the Hull Maritime Museum. After an initial worry that we might have to negotiate my daughters wheelchair upstairs into the building we realised that there was a button to press at the side of the front door for wheelchair users. This brought a friendly staff member to our aid who directed us to a level access at the back of the building. Admission is free. I was astounded given the apparent age of the building that they have appear to have made it fully wheelchair accessible (although those with large powered wheelchair or scooters may struggle at a few points). The museum documents the City’s whaling history and is well worth a visit. The first thing that caught our eye was a huge whale skeleton on the ground floor. You can walk around this by following a ramp around it (it was steep in places with tight corners so this was one of the few places that some might struggle). A corridor off this ramp takes you through to see more exhibits. Loads of model ships, fish and whale skeletons, there was lots that kept my kids interested. There is a lift which takes you to all floors. Currently there is an audio visual installation called Bowhead which my daughter seemed to enjoy, which was quite a sensory experience. Didn’t have chance to check out the toilet facilities, but was impressed overall with the access.
